The Great British Bake Off and Me x

To say it’s been an experience and a half would be an understatement – I have truly had the time of my life! I have had the opportunity to meet and work with nine very talented bakers from all over the country who I am proud to call my good friends and without whom I would never have survived the turmoils of filming. Working with Mel and Sue was hilariously wonderful and of course Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood were fabulous characters to get to know.
The programme has given me an unbelievable confidence boost and a belief in myself that I think was probably missing before.  I have learnt I am transformed into a different person when I bake, the hobby I dearly love is something I am good at even though I never really knew it.  It has made me brave enough to set up The Pink Whisk and to share a piece of me with all you lovely lot!

I have had my share of disasters, criticisms and plenty of tears (mine) along the way, it’s really not as plain sailing as it appears.  At times I was completely ground down by exhaustion and baking failures but somehow I managed to regroup and go again and I have been so glad I did.  The support from my friends and family throughout the bake off was the key to this and I couldn’t have done it without them.   I have made some of the best friends in the other contestants that you can’t even begin to imagine.  They are the loveliest people you could ever wish to meet.
Along the way I have taken criticism for appearing arrogant, something to prove and having a ‘chip on my shoulder’.  It hurts, but yes I have something to prove, to myself – not to anyone else.  If you try hard at something it will pay the dividends.  I am confident and able when I bake, because it’s my ‘thing’.  I spent a long time searching for that.
I have learnt that I can’t do things well first time around (I’m sure my Mum used to tell me that – but did I listen?)  I’m a practise practise practise kind of girl!  Also I’m the living proof that if you put your mind to it you can do anything in the world you choose.  Never in a million years did I think I would get through the auditions let alone come second.  Every step of the way I kept waiting for someone to say ‘sorry Ruth we’ve made a mistake, you can’t bake, what are you doing here?’  I’m pleased to say it didn’t happen and I am so absolutely thrilled to finish a nationwide competition second!

Thank you all for your messages, comments and support throughout the series, it’s meant the world to me and has been great reassurance that most of you out there do actually ‘get’ me!
So, to the winner – Edd.  He is a truly fabulous baker, his technical knowledge is second to none and his passion for baking comes through in everything he does but so much more than that – he is a genuine, warm caring lovely lovely guy.  He will be an unbelievable success and will take the baking world by storm, it has been such a privilege to be there with him for the start of his journey – please raise your glasses with me in a toast – Congratulations to Edd, Britain’s Greatest Amateur Baker!

Okay, enough already with my emotional ramblings, you’ve put up with more than your fair share!
Off to write up the Mint Ginger and Blackberry cake post to share with you shortly.

Lots of Love Ruth xx

Great stuff – we have been willing you to win in our house! Your comment, a few programmes back, about not having gone to university like your friends chimed with me and I felt for you along the way. But you have proved yourself and well done you!

Congratulations on your success! They had such a difficult decision to make – still don't know how they did it! Can't wait for you to post the brilliant-looking mint, ginger & blackberry cakes. If you do & I have time to test them, I'm going to sell them at my usual farmers' market cake stall next Saturday. Loved the stuff you came up with and WELL DONE! Ann x

  18. Carol Oldham says:

You should be really proud of yourself I think you did a fantastic job. There were so many of the things you baked that I just wanted to jump in the TV and eat. Myself and my husband were shouting Ruth Ruth Ruth at the tv and were so disappointed when you didnt win. In our eyes you were the best. Thanks for brightening up our Monday evenings with your fab creations,

  19. She says:

Gutted that you didn't win! Down the road in Macc so would have been great for local to win it. I wouldn't have taken the ginger out too…you were soooo creative. Well done. Xl

  22. Corinne says:

Wow! What wonderful cakes/biscuits/other creations you produced – and you made it all seem so easy! I waited eagerly every week to see what wonderful creations you had come up with. 23. mollysue says:

I was soooo gutted you didn't win. Well done for getting as far as you did Ruth, you did brilliantly & should be very proud of yourself. Lovin The Pink Whisk xx

  24. HeatherNutsy says:

Well done Ruth, I preferred the look of your scones, not to take anything away from Edd though, just found out about your blog and will be visiting it often, going to try and master Pauls Cob loaf this weekend, I, like you prefer the mixer method, it turned out like a brick last weekend, but I will not be beaten.

  25. Christine says:

You are a brilliant cook, my whole family wanted you to win right from the start. I am sure your family are so proud of you, you look to be a wonderful mum. It has been a pleasure to watch your journey. Best wishes for the future. Chris & family

Baking is such a pleasure and to make it on to TV and becoming a contestant in this interesting programme is proof that your a winner anyway. Bravo! Best wishes to you. Joanne Robinson, Pickering.

Just finished watching the final and had my fingers crossed that you would win! I didn't think you were arrogant or had a chip on your shoulder – my confidence and self-belief has also taken a nose dive since having children. I think you spend so much time worrying about and looking after everyone else that you just disappear as an individual sometime, and watching you bake and the pride you put into everything you have produced has inspired me to find my 'thing' and rediscover myself too.

Congratulations on reaching the final, and good luck for the future

    A hungry mum 🙂

  28. Emma says:

I think you're fab. Your cakes looked amazing and I'll be trying some of your recipes (if trying to 'healthify' them to save my reputation)! And hooray for your chickens…we have rescue chickens they're ace. At least you don't have to buy too many eggs for your cakes!

  29. Anonymous says:

Keep on baking, I'm sure we will be hearing more about you and your talents. GBBO has been totally inspirational, I have been baking like crazy ever since, and I bet I'm not alone…

  31. Serendipity (Christine) says:

You totally inspired me to rush into my kitchen and try something new, thank you :-))

  32. Pam Mackinnon says:

You were amazing. Your face when Miranda got knocked out of the final was so genuinely crestfallen and sad for her, you made me cry! I've made your salted peanut shortcake biscuits, the first thing I have successfully baked in years. So thank you for being brave enough to enter the competition and to share your passion, energy and fabulous recipes.

  33. Becky Brombley says:

  40. supraflyguy says:

I've watched the whole series, and came across this site after it was mentioned at the end of the series. First of all congratulations on getting all the way to the final! I know you only get to see just some of what goes on but you seemed like calmness personified all the way through. The mint, ginger and blackberry cakes were, I thought, a very interesting combination and very daring for a final.

To be honest I couldn't separate any of the finalists, but then again I wasn't there to taste… Mores the pity! Again congrats!

  41. jimmysrabbit says:

Congratulations on your wonderful achievement Ruth. Yes Edd is absolutely lovely, but I still think "you was robbed" (sorry Edd 😉 ).
Best of luck with what ever you decide to do next…there have been mutterings on UKScrappers that you should have your own TV series, I'd certainly watch. I have loved watching The great british bake off and only wish it lasted longer – a whole programme devoted to pancakes – too much? maybe.
    Congratulations again

  42. loveaudrey says:

Oh no, spoiler alert… I hadn't watched the final episode yet!! I was convinced you were going to win, but like you say, such an amazing achievement to come 2nd. Your boys must be very proud. I've found your blog and your run on the show hugely inspiring so keep it up. Mint ginger and blackberry sounds delicious, can't wait!

  43. Pixiedust says:

Sorry you lost – really tough competition. I've baked a cake using fresh ginger and I know it works. Will be trying some of your recipes.

  46. janiannie says:

Ruth, I can't believe you didn't win!! I was a big fan of yours all through the programme and got very disappointed in the end with the result.
Please keep baking, all your work is truly fantastic – what a great baker you are. Well done!

  53. Yolanda Elizabet Heuzen says:

    Dear Ruth,

I've been rooting for you the whole series long and felt a bit deflated when Edd won. So wish it had been you because you deserved it more than lovely Edd did as you've shown high quality stuff all series long. But never mind, you did well, very well. Hope you will make a career out of baking, a stellar one coz you deserve it!

love & much admiration for your baking skills,

  57. Debbie says:

I think huge congratulations are in order Ruth. I have watched this series with enjoyment, tears, love and envy but, most of all you, yes you gave 'us' the viewers a story about a young lady with the passion to succeed in something she believed in. I was a pastry chef some yrs ago [I work with glass now!] but still bake for my students and family and this programme and your recipes have been talked about most weeks! Anyway, enough of my ramble! well done to you Ruth, I look forward to your blogs and trying some of your recipes!

Ps. I am now on google searching for those lacy cake cases! 🙂
    Debbie x

  58. Ella says:

Congratulations! Both Edd and yourself were always my favourites to win, its just a shame there could only be one winner. You were both utterly deserving.

I loved the show. I really found it inspirational. I can't wait to try out all the new recipes!

  59. Anonymous says:

Well done Ruth. I'm sure there were many tough times while making the programme but what came across was your passion for baking. So glad you found it a positive experience and the North West is proud of you.

Well done! I have thoroughly enjoyed the bake off. You've all been great to watch. You make truly beautiful cakes and make it look so easy! I'm off to look at your perfect icing swirl tutorial!

  61. Angela says:

First off let me say how much I enjoyed watching you over course of the competition – you were always entertaining & made everything look so easy 🙂 I can't believe that some people thought you were arrogant, I never got that impressions, you were one of the most fun contestants! Congratulations Ruth, loved what you made, looking forward to following your blog – my money was on you from the start, so sorry you didn't win. – Jacqueline xx.

  67. machroi says:

Aww, that made me tear up! Ruth, you don't know me from a bar of soap, but I watched your progress through the series, and was in awe of your ability and your focus. No wonder you made it to the final. You were there because you deserved to be, let the naysayers carry on. TV is great at making monsters or heroes out of people, but it was your baking that did the talking.

I can only hope and practice like crazy to be half as good a baker as you.

You did so well. Keep spreading the joy of baking!

  68. Anonymous says:

Ruth you were my favourite contestant the whole time 🙂 I loved your calmness and creativity as well as seeing the thought and love that went into all that you baked
If one day, when I have a family of my own, I can be even just a little bit like you with your baking and familyness, I will be so happy!

  69. Lynne says:

Just discovered your blog, but have been enjoying watching the programmes. They were great. Congratulations on doing so well!

Now I just have to trawl through all the amazing-ness you post to find something to try first. Best of luck with everything. Vanessa six0six design

  71. ryan@abigail*ryan says:

    You was robbed! 😉

We thoroughly enjoyed the program, and you were our favourite from the start, so it's lovely to read that it gave you such a confidence boost and you had such a wonderful time.

I can't wait to start plundering your archives from some baking tips and recipes- the black forest brownies in the sidebar have certainly caught my eye!

    All the best 😉

  74. MaySze says:

Hi Ruth!! I have been cheering for since this program started! I hope to see you with the trophy so badly, but I do see how Ed came so strongly! Well done you!! For me, you are still a winner! Can't wait to see more of your new receipts and new invention!! Keep the good work!

  75. Anonymous says:

Ruth- I thought you were/are fantastic. I've been completely hooked on the show and was pretty much rooting for you from day 1. I think you're incredibly talented and you seemed to sail through every challenge. I was genuinely quite upset when they announced that you were not the winner! I'm sure it has been tough for you but you seemed to take it so well that it's almost made me feel as though I'm more upset about it than you!

I hope you go on to continue to bake your wonderful creations and if you ever bring out a cookbook then I hope to be one of the first to buy it!

Amy (from North Cheshire, not far from you at all) xxx

  76. Shamaila says:

So glad I watched till the end and found out you have a food blog. Really made my day. A great big well done, I wish you keep up being confident as you have a lot to offer and have got so far. You should be proud. I hope a good opportunity comes to you as you deserve it. In the meantime, I look forward to reading more of your recipes and hopefully trying them out.

What a great show and well done you…I'm in awe! So close at the end, but was rooting for you…also a mummy of 3 boys, love to cook & all of you have reignited my love of baking, even though I live a mile up in the sky which makes it a challenge! Congrats all 'round…hope to see more of you, Edd and Miranda soon!

  79. Anonymous says:

Congratulations. To me (a dutch hobby bread baker) you are the true winner. Far more creative, and more in control. If you write the book you were talking about, I'll certainly buy it. Keep on baking!!

  80. Sharon Grimshaw says:

Arrogant? Never! Well done Ruth, you are a star. I wish I could bake as well as you… ah well, will keep trying and feeding kids and hubby the results! A day without baking just isn't right, is it? Will be following the Pink Whisk avidly… big hugs from Yorkshire xx

Hi Ruth, a little mail from Holland. I just wanted to tell you you did an amazing job, I was in awe of all the things you baked. I really enjoyed watching the last 3 episodes (to my regret I didn't discover it sooner) and rooted for you as soon as I saw the show. You are a winner in my book. Big hug for you from Anita Westerveld.

  83. Babs Banter/QUILTECH says:

Result was not quite a travesty – but thought you should have been the winner and that Paul was prejudiced. You were consistent throughout. Your scones looked wonderful whereas Ed's had no filling at all. His cakes were not a patch on yours. Am sure many others felt the same. I knew Paul would pick Ed from the beginning – made lots of allowances for him. Ed's a nice lad but his baking is not a patch on yours.

  84. says:

Congratulations, I don't know how the judges managed to choose between the 3 of you, all wonderful recipes, great entertainment and a joy to watch. Thanks for such entertaining Tuesday night tv and good luck with future projects.

  85. Pene says:

Congratulations Ruth, I have thoroughly loved to programme and enjoyed watching you. I know there could be only one winner but I think I'm not aslone in saying you were all winners in our eyes. Cake envy is a terrible thing but I definately have it. Happy baking

Congratulations on producing some fantastic results. Sorry you didn't win but the whole series was brilliant to watch. It is time to start baking myself, starting this weekend. I hope the BBC commission a step by step baking series where the reasons for the steps are explained.

  88. Glen says:

WOW Ruth. I was glued to the tv watching and hoping you would be the winner. Well, you are in my eyes. *Ü* What a lovely programme and to see Mary Berry again after so many years missing from the cookery programmes I used to watch of hers many years ago, was definately a sweet treat. I shall be watching out for your own tv programme now. *Ü* Keep up the tasty blog. I love it. TFS. ~Glen~

  89. Kelly-Jane says:

Well done Ruth! It was a pity the thre finalists couldn't have won, as we thought you were all great.

I'd also buy a cookbook by you – if you ever do one!

  90. Dylan Edwards says:

Ruth … I thought you where so gracious in defeat i was so rooting ( ginger root obliviously !!) for you to win . Though credit to Ed ….would have liked to see how to got that plaster on his palm , but to was a very strong baker .

I will be watching for your book and i am so going to try your mint, ginger and blackberry cakes ……

All the very best for the future

  91. The Hebe Bee says:

Well done! What an inspiration you are. Much as I wish Edd well – he is obviously a man with a superb talent, I have a feeling that this may be yet another TV competition where we end up hearing much more about the runner up afterwards than we do the winner. Love your blog. Right I am off out to buy the Christmas cake fruit!

  92. Anonymous says:

Congratulations, well done, although from about episode one onwards I did think you would go on to win. Still, I think it was very close and I agree with your comments on Edd. I am sure you both will do very well and wish you the best of luck. Your website is great, discovered it after the programme last night. Thought your Mint Giner and Blackberry cake sounded intriguing, and brave to try it in the final. Keep on being creative!

  93. Gina says:

I have loved the programme Ruth and thought you were all amazing to bake like you did under so much pressure. As an amateur baker I can only imagine how difficult is must have been. I think you were all winners… well done!

  94. jamila says:

Just wanted to ditto all the lovely things said above. You really are an inspiration. x

  95. Ivy Black says:

Well done Ruth! I thought you were brilliant and I love your whole attitude to baking and everything really! You must do your book…it would fly off the shelves. xx

  96. chiefcookandbottlewasher says:

Sorry that you didnt win, your baking was inspiring. As is this blog! Love your writing and recipes, it inspired me to finally start writing my own!

  97. Linda says:

Congratulations Ruth. Personally I think you should have won, not to say Edd wasn't good but you were inspiring! It was great to see you with your family, you have three lovely boys there and so supportive. I've been rooting for you since programme one and so enjoyed your innovative recipes and you were so right to push the boundaries with your flavours, I totally agree with the ginger in the final. I was practically drooling at your finished creations. Keep up with the Pink Whisk, it's a terrific blog and if you write a book, it'll be on the top of my wish list.

Congratulations! I know coming second isn't the same as coming first, but sometimes second is the best place to be!
I have loved your tenacity and spirit right from the first programme.
Your baking has been wonderful and inspiring too!

  99. Anonymous says:

Congratulations Ruth. You are extremely talented and were my favourite right from the start. I don't think you came across as arrogant at all, so don't take any notice. Focussed and determined, yes, but not arrogant. I am sure if you had made smaller scones in the final, you would have won! Keep up the good work.

  100. Eric the Viking, Bradford says:

  103. Sheila says:

    Hi Ruth

I watched the final last night and I thought that you did brilliantly. There is no way I could have done that final tea party challenge. I would have cracked under the pressure! It's such a shame that both you and Edd couldn't have won. At one point I thought that was going to be the result.

You've inspired me to start doing more baking as I've always enjoyed it and now I have young son I have a very willing volunteer for the taste tests!

I hope to hear lots more from you in the future as coming second was no mean feat.

  104. Abbie says:

Congratulations Ruth! You did fantastically! If I could bake nearly half as well as you I'd be a happy lady! I look forward to your recipes appearing on the blog, and I can't wait to try some of them out! A very deserving finalist! xx

Well, you're not going to see this right down at the end I know, but I just wanted to add my congrats at getting to the final. Your imagination and inspiration got you there, together with that 'practise, practise, practise' philosophy and sheer determination. I am sure everyone who knows you is so proud. I am also pleased Edd won, because he comes from the town of my birth, Bradford! In fact, most of you deserved to win, and as always, it was a shame someone had to lose.
Good luck with all your endeavours, I'll keep coming back to read your blog.

I only got to see the final last night having spent all of Wednesday avoiding the media and friends as I didn't want any spoilers. I really wanted you to win – I think you are amazing at how you cooly and calmly manage to produce such amazing cakes. I was so pleased to see that you have a blog that first thing today (even before my espresso) I had to come and find it! I shall now sneak in a read throughout the day but I just wanted to say that you are an inspiration and got me back reading my cookery books.

Good luck with all your future endeavours – you are amazing.

After watching you, Edd and all the others I have reconsidered quitting my usual Christmas gift baking extravaganza! Not only will I be keeping it up but I think I'll try going all out for something you'd be proud of!! I got in to magazine writing (on veg growing!) and have been doing it for three years now so just go for it – you have a lovely approachable style. All the best, Lucy x

  188. lillibet says:

I didn't think you were at all arrogant – and I often feel that confident people are. I loved it when you got a little competitive towards the end, but the main thing was you always seemed to be enjoying yourself and that made great viewing. I LOVED when you offered to share your oven and I was routing for you to win.

When I watched the first episode I said to myself 'I could do this! I should have entered!'. After the first fifteen minutes or so (basically after the signature cakes were over) I was saying 'I should never, ever do anything like this! Never!'. I LOVE baking and think I am quite good at it but you guys are an entirely different league! Fabulous viewing. Thank you sooo much for doing it!
